Most big events in Klaipeda take place during the summer season. Events such as the Sea Festival or the Klaipeda Jazz Festival, which attract musicians from all over the world have long traditions. The city is also famous for its museums. All in all exist 5 museums and many more in the nearby cities as in Palanga or in Kretinga. Theatres, art galleries, shopping centres or multifunctional arenas for various events are other places to spend ones leisure time.
Especially during the tourist season in summer different cultural and sporting events can be experienced.
The Klaipeda Sea Festival usually starts at the end of July respectively beginning of August and lasts for 3 days. Before the festival starts the High Street is nicely decorated and the opening ceremony starts with the Mayor's speech following various free street concerts and a local market where it is possible to purchase various handmade tools and crafts, locally produced food and clothing. There is also a carnival where mythological sea creatures are presented by adults and children dressed up in different costumes. Klaipeda Jazz Fesival is an international event and has the status of a city festival. The festival that is open and free for anybody is held every year in the beginning of June. Since its first release in 2003 the festival has become an important part of the cultural life in Klaipeda city and Lithuania. The performances of such masters as Toots Thielemans, Billy Cobham, Maynard Ferguson, Jean Jacques Milteau, Mike Mainieri, Jim Beard, Victor Bailey and many other musicians have attracted many jazz fans.Internet: www.jazz.lt
The Ship Parade is held every year in the end of May. The parade initiates the opening of the shipping season.
"Šermukšnis" is a huge theatre festival which combines different genres of theatre. 20 theatre groups from foreign countries are invited. But not only typical plays are shown in this colourful festival. There is also a carnival, a lot of music and several circus performances. "Šermukšnis" transforms the city into a vibrant and phantasmagoric place.
